Antibiotics Resistance Is On The Rise
"Antibiotics resistance is on the rise," says lead author Rachel S. Funtion, M. D., director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Antibiotic Resistance and Resistance Programs. "We are seeing a sharp decline in the number of prescriptions we take, in the amount of antibiotic prescriptions we dispense, and in the amount of doses we receive. This is a major public health problem."
"Antibiotic resistance is on the rise," adds Funtion, who is on the receiving end of a decade-long study to investigate the link between antibiotic use and an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. "There is also an increased risk of pneumonia."
"We are seeing an alarming trend," she adds.
"In my clinical experience, augmentin is very safe and generally well tolerated. When used appropriately, it can be a valuable treatment option for a wide range of bacterial infections, including middle ear infections and sinusitis. Augmentin is also effective against a wide range of sexually transmitted infections, including gonorrhea and syphilis," Funtion says.
In addition, she emphasizes that "augmentin is not a panacea," focusing instead on preventing resistance through proper use and proper administration of the medication.
The research has so far focused on augmentin as an antibiotic, Funtion says, but it has also been studied for other infections, including bacterial vaginosis, which is the common cause of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) death. "We are currently investigating the use of augmentin as a treatment option for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) in women who have vaginitis and vulvovaginal candidiasis, two of the most common infections," Funtion says.
According to Sesame, the CDC has also found an association between antibiotic use and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and type 2 hypertension.
While the findings are promising, Funtion says it's important to remember that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is monitoring these findings closely.
FAIDS Action Network (FAAN) director Dr. Michael E. Jacobson, M. D., says, "This study highlights the need for ongoing research to determine the long-term effects of antibiotic use on the health of U. women and to determine if augmentin is a viable treatment option for these infections."
